Benefit Costs

The costs of Health Association Nova Scotia benefits are set each year and take effect on April 1st of every year. On occasion rates may change during the year.  

The full monthly cost of your benefits is shown below. For information about your portion of your benefit costs, contact your Benefits Administrator.

 

Health Plan

The total rates for employees include the cost of Emergency Travel coverage.

If you are an active employee, you may be eligible for the “Over/Under” rate if:

  • You are under age 70 but your spouse is 70 or older, or
  • You are age 70 or older but your spouse or dependent child is under age 70

In both cases, the employee or their spouse who is 70 or older is not eligible for Prescription Drug coverage. 

If you are retired member, you may be eligible for the “Retiree Two Person Rate” rate if:

  • You are under age 65 but your spouse is 65 or older, or
  • You are age 65 or older but your spouse or dependent child is under age 65

In both cases, the employee or their spouse who is 65 or older is not eligible for Prescription Drug coverage.

 

Emergency Travel 

Rates are included in the Health rates ($0.85 single and $1.72 family coverage).

 

Dental Plan

  • $38.80 per month for single coverage
  • $89.20 per month for family coverage


Long Term Disability Plan

The monthly cost of your Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage is equal to 3.34% of your earnings.

You pay 50% of the cost of your LTD coverage and your employer pays for the other 50%.

 

Basic Life Insurance

If you are an employee, the monthly cost of Basic Life Insurance coverage for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependent children is $0.17 for every $1,000 of coverage.

If you are a retired member who retired after July 1, 2004, the monthly cost of your Basic Life Insurance is $0.30 for every $1,000 of coverage.
  

Optional Life Insurance

The monthly cost of Optional Life Insurance coverage for you and/or your spouse depends on your and/or your spouse’s age, gender and smoking status.

The cost of Optional Life Insurance for your eligible dependent children depends on the amount of coverage you select.

Optional Critical Illness

The monthly cost of Critical Illness coverage depends on your and/or your spouse’s age, gender and smoking status.

Optional Accidental Death and Dismemberment

The monthly cost of your Optional Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage depends on whether you select coverage for yourself only or for you and your family:

$0.19 per $10,000 of coverage for employee-only.
$0.36 per $10,000 of coverage for employee and family.
