Group Benefits Solutions
Group Benefits Solutions provides and supports long term disability, group life, extended health, dental benefits, optional AD&D and critical illness insurance to over 22,000 employees of Health Association member organizations and approximately 2,800 retirees. Our knowledgeable staff provide full disability program management and plan text and/or benefit contract interpretation. The service provides centralized benefit administration from a provincial database maintained by the service. Plans are cost-shared between employers and active employees.
In early 2000, Group Benefits Solutions launched a province-wide early intervention program for employees enrolled in the NSAHO Long Term Disability Plan. The program is an undertaking of the Long Term Disability Trustees who are comprised of employer and employee representatives and are responsible for the governance of the Long Term Disability Plan.The program is called EASE (Early Assistance and Support for Employees).
Group Benefits Solutions also administers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for healthcare workers employed in the acute care sector.

REPLACEMENT CARDS FOR THE LAWTONS DRUGS PREFERRED DISCOUNT PROGRAM
Please be advised, that eligible plan members will receive a new Lawtons Drugs discount card to replace their paper lighthouse card. The new “plastic” discount card is expected to be mailed to your home address by the middle of December.
If you do not receive your replacement card by December 31, 2013 please contact MHCSI at 1-888-686-6427. The new card will be valid for five years and will have an expiry date of December 31, 2018.
Please note, it is the Lawtons “Lighthouse” Card that is being replaced; the Supplementary Pharmacy Benefit Card does not expire and will not be replaced.
If you are a member of the Health Association Nova Scotia Extended Health Plan, and would like more information on savings available to you, or you need to replace a lost Lawtons loyalty card or MHCSI supplementary pharmacy benefit card, please contact MHCSI (Managed Health Care Services Incorporated) directly at 1-888-686-6427.
LOBLAW’S PHARMACIES - PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNTS FOR HEALTH PLAN MEMBERS
As part of our commitment to seek partnerships that benefit our members, we are entering into a second preferred pharmacy provider arrangement. In addition to our partnership with Sobeys/Lawtons, this offers plan members expanded geographic access and more choice.
We are excited to announce that Group Benefits Solutions has partnered with Loblaw’s (Superstore) Pharmacies. This partnership offers employees of member organizations enrolled in the Health Association Nova Scotia Health Plan savings on their prescriptions. Please note, this applies only to those plan members with drug coverage under our plan.
Effective July, 2013 employees enrolled in the health plan who fill their prescription at a Loblaw’s pharmacy in Nova Scotia will pay a low flat dispensing fee per prescription. Plan A members will pay the dispensing fee of $5.99. Plan B members will pay the dispensing fee of $5.99, plus a co-pay of $3.00. This provides savings of up to $2 off of the standard fee. Fees vary in other provinces and this program offers comparable savings across Canada.

EXCITING NEWS FOR OUR HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN MEMBERS!
We are committed to providing you with health resources and tools. Your Health Risk Assessment (HRA) tool has been replaced with a new and improved wellness portal and health assessment called My Good Health.
Please check out the attached communication for information on this exciting enhancement to our health plan. It introduces the new portal, identifies who has access, and lets you know how to retrieve your current HRA data.
MEDAVIE BLUE CROSS ORTHOTICS AND ORTHOPEDIC SHOES BENEFIT CRITERIA
Medavie Blue Cross is committed to meeting the needs of our members while ensuring plans remain sustainable and affordable. Part of this commitment is regularly reviewing our benefits to ensure they reflect industry standards and claims are adjudicated within the benefit guidelines.
MBC benefits management team conducted a review of the orthotics and orthopedic shoes benefits after noticing that a growing number of claims were not falling within the intent of the benefits. As a result of this review MBC are introducing some new claims practices effective May 1st, 2013. It is important to note that the intent of either benefit has not changed.
Some of the new claims practices include:
- Types of approved providers
- Types of eligible orthopedic shoes and orthotics
- Receipt requirements
To make it easier for members to understand what types of orthotics and orthopedic shoes are eligible, we have included a bulletin detailing the reimbursement guidelines. Please check out the ‘quick reference guidelines’ for Orthotics and for Orthopedic Shoes
